Context and history
Published in six volumes between 1830 and 1842. It is here that the word 'sociologie' first appears, coined by Comte because he disliked 'social physics'. Nobody now holds the law of three stages, but the idea that social phenomena can be studied methodically, and that the sciences stand in a hierarchy, marked the whole century.
