What it is about
The second volume of 'El Criticón', the allegorical novel in which Gracián set out the whole of human life as a journey of discovery and disillusion.
Context and history
The work has three parts, published between 1651 and 1657, corresponding to the three ages of life: the spring of childhood, the autumn of manhood and the winter of old age. Andrenio, raised without society on an island, and Critilo, a civilised man shipwrecked there, travel the world together and meet, one by one, the deceptions of which it is made: the court, fame, riches, appearance. Gracián's Spanish is difficult and deliberately so: every sentence is built like a mechanism, and the conceptismo he himself theorised is here carried to its limit. Schopenhauer, who translated it into German, thought it one of the best books in the world.
