What it is about

A Biographical Sketch of an Infant (1877).

Context and history

Darwin took notes on his son Doddy's first years in 1839–40 and published them forty years later. A short paper, and at the same time one of the founding texts of developmental psychology: it observes the appearance of fear, anger, mirror recognition and language exactly as it would any species.

Editorial context, not a citable source: unlike the passages of the work itself, these statements cannot be checked against the corpus.

How it begins
features that certain faces clearly pleased him much more than others, even at so early an age as a little over six months. Before he was a year old, he understood intonations and gestures, as well as several words and short sentences. He understood one word, namely, his nurse's name, exactly five months before he invented his first word mum; and this is what might have been expected, as we know that the lower animals easily learn to understand spoken words.
