What it is about

The fragments of Democritus within Diels's collection of the Presocratics, in Greek with the German translation alongside.

Context and history

Not one work of Democritus survives: the ancients credited him with dozens of titles and we have none of them whole, only quotations scattered through other authors and summaries by opponents. This means ancient atomism reaches us at second hand, and that many of the moral sayings circulating under his name are of uncertain attribution. Diels's numbering — later Diels-Kranz — is the standard way of citing him, and the number serves better than the page.

Editorial context, not a citable source: unlike the passages of the work itself, these statements cannot be checked against the corpus.
