What it is about

A volume gathering three very different things by Descartes: his early physics, his last book on the emotions, and the treatise that created analytic geometry.

Context and history

'Le Monde' was written around 1633 and withdrawn when he heard of Galileo's condemnation, since the book assumes that the earth moves; it was published after his death. 'The Passions of the Soul', of 1649, is a quite different Descartes: an analysis of six primitive passions and of how body and soul affect one another, written at the request of Princess Elisabeth of Bohemia, who had put to him the question he could not answer. 'La géométrie' was an appendix to the 'Discourse on Method', and it is where the coordinates and the exponent notation we still use appear. That these are three separate works, from three moments and three genres, is worth keeping in mind while reading the volume.

Editorial context, not a citable source: unlike the passages of the work itself, these statements cannot be checked against the corpus.
