The 1874 book that reopened the question of what distinguishes the mental from the physical, and that gave later philosophy the notion of intentionality.
Context and history
The central thesis is short and has proved enormously fertile: every mental phenomenon is 'of something'. There is no seeing that sees nothing, no desiring without something desired; the object is contained in a way Brentano called intentional, and which does not require that it really exist — one can fear a thing that is not there. No physical phenomenon has this, and so the mark serves to distinguish the two domains. Brentano wanted a psychology that was empirical but not experimental in the laboratory sense, made by careful description of what is given. Husserl was his student, and phenomenology came out of it; Meinong, Twardowski and, for a while, Freud also passed through.
