The second volume of the 'Science of Logic' in German: the subjective logic, or doctrine of the concept.
Context and history
This is the major work; it is not to be confused with the logic of the Encyclopaedia, which is the summary for the lecture room and is also in the catalogue. The first volume holds the objective logic — being and essence; this one, published in 1816, is where Hegel sets out the concept, the judgement and the syllogism, and then objectivity and the idea, ending in the absolute idea, which is the method itself reflecting on itself. It should be known that 'concept' (Begriff) does not mean a mental representation here: it is the structure that makes a thing what it is. It is Hegel's hardest text and the one he regarded as his principal work; Marx said there was a usable dialectic in it beneath a mystified form.
