Context and history
Published in 1908. The central concept is the 'myth': an image to be judged not by whether it is true but by what it makes those who believe it do — and the general strike is his example. The idea could be used in opposite directions, and was: revolutionary syndicalists on one side, and Italian fascism on the other, which Sorel regarded with sympathy at the end of his life. It is worth reading with that in view, since it is a clear case of how an argument about the form of belief can serve contrary contents.
