What it is about
The first volume of Vico's 'New Science', in Italian: the book arguing that we can know history better than nature, because history is what we ourselves have made.
Context and history
The principle is this: 'verum ipsum factum', the true is the made. God knows nature because he made it; men, by contrast, can truly know the civil world — languages, laws, myths, institutions — because they have been its authors. From this Vico derives an ideal eternal history through which all peoples pass: the age of gods, the age of heroes and the age of men, followed by the 'ricorso', the falling back and the return. He published it in 1725 and rewrote it twice; nobody paid attention until Michelet translated it a hundred years later. It is the origin of the idea that each age must be understood in its own terms.

I A mostrare il posto che la Scienza nuova occupa nella produzione filosofica del Vico, basta non tanto il fatto che egli stesso ebbe parecchie volte a manifestare il desiderio che tutte le sue opere si perdessero e soli gli sopravvivessero quei «cinque libri d’intorno alla comune natura delle nazioni», quanto l’altro fatto, assai più significativo, che la vita spirituale di lui può dividersi in due periodi: l’uno, che va su per giù dal 1694 al 1717 o 1718, dedicato a meditare l’opera sua capitale; l’altro, dal 1718 al 1739 o 1740, consacrato a scriverla. Non è nostro compito di studiare il primo periodo. La preistoria della Scienza nuova, che, se avessimo maggior copia di documenti, darebbe luogo a un lavoro assai suggestivo, esce fuori dal campo di una modesta introduzione bibliografica, ohe deve limitarsi a narrare la storia quasi meramente estrinseca di quel libro maraviglioso.
