What it is about
Lessing's 1766 essay on why painting and poetry cannot do the same thing, written out of a statue and some lines of Virgil.
Context and history
The starting point is a concrete observation: in the Laocoön sculptural group the priest does not cry out, whereas in the Aeneid he does. From this Lessing draws a distinction that has lasted: the plastic arts occupy space and must settle on a single instant, so they have to choose the most pregnant moment, the one that lets us imagine what came before and after; poetry unfolds in time and can narrate the whole action. Hence his criticism of the formula 'ut pictura poesis', which asked poetry to paint. It is one of the founding texts of modern art criticism, and Goethe said it was a liberation for his generation.
Editorial context, not a citable source: unlike the passages of the work itself, these statements cannot be checked against the corpus.
Painting and Poetry, thoügh they have the same object, — to delight OS through the Imitation of reality, — differ greatly in character. This difference, arising from the difference of the material in which they vvork and from the different manner in which they proceed, has been frequently overlooked both by critics and artists. The former applied the same Standard to the productions of the two arts and produced thereby a lamentable confusion injurious to those arts themselves ; the latter, led astray by a false criticism, feil into grievons errors ; painters especially into a rage for allegory, poets into a rage for description. To attempt to assign to each of these two arts its proper sphere is the object of this treatise.
