What it is about

Balmes's philosophy textbook for students: logic, metaphysics, ethics and the history of philosophy, in four parts designed for teaching.

Context and history

Published in 1847, the year before he died. It is a textbook and should be read as one: the order is that of a course rather than of an inquiry, and the tone is that of a man explaining. It served as the manual in Spanish seminaries and colleges for decades, which gives it an added interest: reading it, one learns what was taught as philosophy in nineteenth-century Spain and in what words. The Balmes who thinks for himself is more in El criterio and in the political writings.

Editorial context, not a citable source: unlike the passages of the work itself, these statements cannot be checked against the corpus.
