What it is about
The poem of the Spiritual Canticle together with the prose commentary John of the Cross himself wrote afterwards.
Context and history
The poem grows out of the Song of Songs and takes its form: the soul seeking the Beloved who has hidden from her. He composed the first stanzas in the prison at Toledo, where his own brothers in religion shut him up in 1577. The commentary he wrote at the request of nuns who asked what it meant, and the distance between the two is part of what makes this text singular: the poem explains nothing and the prose tries to explain everything.
Editorial context, not a citable source: unlike the passages of the work itself, these statements cannot be checked against the corpus.
