Context and history
The Flame is the text of the road's end: where the Dark Night describes deprivation, this describes what comes after, and the tone changes entirely. He said himself that he wrote the commentary very fast. What makes this gathering valuable, though, is the rest: the letters and counsels are John of the Cross writing to particular people about particular troubles, without the strain of the treatise, and it is where he is closest at hand.
