Context and history
One thing is worth knowing before starting: both comment on the SAME poem, 'En una noche oscura', and both were left unfinished. The Ascent breaks off, and the Night takes up the same road from another angle and breaks off too. They are not two successive works but two attempts on one text, and reading them as a single continuous treatise leads to confusion.
