A handbook of short maxims for the young, by the Valencian Juan Luis Vives, who lived exiled in Bruges and was a friend of Erasmus and Thomas More. It was among the most reprinted schoolbooks in Europe for two centuries. His family was persecuted by the Inquisition; he never returned.
