Context and history
Eckhart preached in German to people who knew no Latin, and that is part of what brought him trouble: telling a lay congregation that there is a ground of the soul where God and man are not distinguished is one thing debated in a university and another said in the street. He was tried, defended himself by saying he had been misunderstood, and died before sentence. In 1329 the bull In agro dominico condemned seventeen of his propositions — he was already dead.

It is ittle enough compared with the works of Eckhart still known :o Tritheniius and of which he gives quite a long catalogue in his book De Scriptoribus Eedes, (s. Fabricii bibliotheca ccoles. llani-Durgh, 1718, fol. pag. 130) ; but on the other hand what I offer rierc is at least three times the amount of what has hitherto been known, and the teaching, the philosojihie systern of this remarkable Trian can now be presented in a more definite and complete form ^haii it was possible to do from the scanty and untrustworthy lata possessed before. In order to give an account of the means within my reach and It the same time to give the reader some idea of the extent and lifTiculty of my work, I append a list of the jirinted matter and nanu scripts used, together with a statement of their contents irranged and numbered to correspond with my edition.
