Context and history
The starting point is not a concept but 'the man of flesh and bone, the one who is born, suffers and dies, above all dies'. Out of this man comes the contradiction Unamuno refuses to resolve: reason shows there is no immortality and the heart requires it, and life consists in living inside that collision without abandoning either side. Hence his criticism of rationalism and of comfortable faith alike; hence the figure of Don Quixote as a hero of the will against the evidence. It is written in the first person, deliberately self-contradictory, and it is not a treatise: it is a man arguing with himself out loud. It preceded existentialism by thirty years and was no part of it.
