Context and history
It is the second-oldest surviving book from Japan and the first of the six official histories. It was compiled at court command and written in classical Chinese, the learned language of the day, which already says who it was made for. The early books are mythological and the later ones annalistic: the closer it comes to the time of writing, the more it can be checked against other sources. It should be read knowing that it is an official history, made to legitimise a dynasty, and that its early chronology is not reliable.
