Published in 1697. The form is the argument: the article above is usually sober and short, and beneath it pile up enormous notes where Bayle weighs the sources, sets them against each other and leaves the reader before a tangle nobody has undone. It was the reference book of the whole eighteenth century and the quarry from which Voltaire and the encyclopédistes took their material; it reads better by jumping into the notes than straight through.
