What it is about

The whole of Sextus Empiricus: the Outlines of Pyrrhonism, which set out the sceptical method, and Against the Mathematicians and Against the Philosophers, which apply it discipline by discipline.

Context and history

Sextus was writing around the second or third century and is our principal source for Pyrrhonism: much of what is known about ancient scepticism comes from these pages. When the work was printed again in the sixteenth century, in Greek and Latin, it shook early modern Europe — Montaigne comes straight out of it, and Descartes wrote the method of doubt with these arguments in front of him.

Editorial context, not a citable source: unlike the passages of the work itself, these statements cannot be checked against the corpus.
