Context and history
The text took shape during China's Warring States period (5th–3rd centuries BC), when war ceased to be an affair of nobles and became the business of whole states. Its attribution to a general named Sun Wu is traditional and disputed. This is Lionel Giles's English translation of 1910, the version that made the book known outside China.
