Context and history
Tertullian is the first major Christian author to write in Latin, and much of the vocabulary Western Christianity would later use — starting with 'trinitas' — comes from him. Against Marcion has a further value as a source: Marcion wanted a Bible without the Old Testament, and nearly all we know of him comes from the man refuting him. Late in life Tertullian went over to Montanism, which is why he has never been declared a saint.
