Context and history
It is worth knowing where what one reads comes from. Molesworth gathered all of Hobbes in English into eleven volumes, and for more than a century this was the standard edition; the division into volumes is his, not Hobbes's, who published his books separately and across decades. In the catalogue, then, a 'volume' does not correspond to a work but to a nineteenth-century editor's decision. To cite Hobbes, the custom is to give the work and the chapter, not the volume.
