Dilthey's attempt to found the human sciences — history, law, literature, religion — on a method of their own, rather than copying that of the natural sciences.
Context and history
Published in 1883. The distinction that comes out of it is the one that has lasted: the natural sciences explain, the human sciences understand; one looks for causes and the other for meaning, and confusing them is what Dilthey meant to prevent. One thing is worth knowing: this volume is the first of a work meant to have more, and the second never came. What one reads is therefore a statement of the problem without the construction that was to follow.
