What it is about

Kant's most readable book: the summary, published in 1798, of the anthropology courses he gave for twenty-five years, on what human beings are actually like and what they can make of it.

Context and history

'In a pragmatic respect' means that it is not about what nature makes of man but about what man can make of himself, and that sets it apart from the rest of his work. There are no transcendental deductions here: there are observations on egoism, memory, imagination, lying, vanity, fear, boredom, the differences between peoples and between men and women, character, humour. This is Kant explaining what he had watched, often with irony, and it is as close as he came to literature. It should be read knowing that there are judgements about peoples and about women which are the prejudices of his century and make uncomfortable reading today; they are there because the text is what it is.

Editorial context, not a citable source: unlike the passages of the work itself, these statements cannot be checked against the corpus.

How it begins
